With the last top slab being cast on the overlying tunnel on Science Avenue in Chongqing on September 29, builders from China Railway No.4 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (CREC4) have finished constructing its main structure, marking the smooth progress in this EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) project.
The Science Valley’s Overlying Tunnel Project, part of the tasks for Chongqing Science Avenue first-phase EPC undertakings, is being undertaken by CREC4 Fourth Engineering Co., Ltd. The Science Avenue first-phase project, starting at Shizikou Interchange in the south and ending at Zhongzhu Interchange in the north, extends for 10.5 kilometers. The project covers roads, interchanges, bridges, tunnels, drainage, lighting, comprehensive pipe gallery, green landscape, traffic engineering, safety facilities, sponge city construction, traffic conversion and other ancillary works.
Among them, the overlying tunnel on Science Avenue runs for 1,004 meters, and is a control project with the highest safety risks and is the most difficult for construction. As it is adjacent to the existing traffic roads, other Science Valley projects under construction as well as the Evergrande residential area in the east, it poses special challenges for the CREC4 builders.
Facing the challenges, the CREC4 builders worked for 83 consecutive days and finished 666 pile foundations, 8,432 tons of reinforcement processing and binding, and 45000 cubic meters of concrete pouring, thus completing the task ahead of schedule, and saving time for the subsequent construction of roads, water and electricity facilities in the tunnel.
Located in the middle of the western valley in the main urban area of Chongqing, Chongqing Science Avenue links Beibei with Jiangjin by running through the entire western valley from the north to the south. As a central axis in developing the Chongqing Science City, it is also an important north-south transport artery in the main urban area.
