Builders from China Railway No.4 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (CREC4) have started operating the first shield machine at Dapeng New Area in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, for the Phase III Project of Shenzhen Metro Line 8, marking the official commencement in digging work.

They started the first shield machine, named “Jinggangshan”, to dig at Xiyong Station on November 30, kicking off the shield construction job.

The project, extending for 3.7 kilometers and undertaken by CREC4 Fifth Engineering Co., Ltd, starts at Xiaomeisha Station in Yantian District and ends at Xichong Station in Dapeng New Area. At Xichong Station, a branch line will be led out to connect with a new metro train base in Xichong.

The Jinggangshan shield machine, with a designed excavation diameter in cutter head of 6.58 meters and being 110 meters long for the total length, weighs some 600 metric tons. With a maximum excavation speed at 8 centimeters a minute, it is being used to dig the tunnel shield’s right side which is 3,194.359 meters long. The shield construction will be difficult and risky, as the shield needs to pass through a variety of strata including moderately weathered and slightly weathered granite, and sandy clay, and go underneath expressways and rivers.

The Phase III Project of Shenzhen Metro Line 8 is the first subway line running to Dapeng New Area, and upon completion, it will connect with Phase I, Phase II and Phase III of Line 2 as well as Phase I and Phase II of Line 8. By then, the line will be a backbone rail transit artery connecting the districts of Nanshan, Futian, Luohu, Yantian with Dapeng New Area.

As a rail transit trunk corridor running through the east and west of Shenzhen and effectively serving the commuter passenger flow in Yantian and Dapeng, the new line will also play a key role in building Dapeng New Area into a concentration carrier for a global marine central city, and a world-class coastal eco-tourism resort.
