China's first project in support ofCosta Rica's water supply and public well-beingsince the two countries established diplomatic relations started construction on April 10 local time in Canas.

At the launching ceremony, Costa Rica's presidential chief of staff Rodolfo Piza expressed his gratitude forChinese SOEs' help in improving the country's infrastructure construction and pointed out that the project would solve the water shortage of Canas and Bebedero.

Chinese Ambassador to Costa Rica, Tang Heng,said China highly values the bilateral relations with Costa Rica and regardsthe country as a trustful friend.

The project is China's third aid project in the country and is the most anticipatedpublic benefitproject by local people among the six assistance projects requestedby Costa Rica ofChina since 2015.

With an investment of about 118.66 million yuan ($17.68 million), pontoons and water intake pumping stations near a reservoir in Sandillal de Canas will be set up.

In addition, a water treatment plant and 14-kilometer raw water and clean water pipelines are also to be built.

The project is scheduled to be completed within 16 months and will effectively relieve water shortage in Canas and provide water of better quality, which will benefit local people's health and improvement the environment.
